An approximation of the inpatient distribution in hospitals with patient relocation using Markov chains

Many hospitals struggle with insufficient capacity for their inpatients. As a result, may benefit from an approach that evaluates the occupancy of inpatient wards. In this study, we approximate distributions wards, accounting cases where patients relocate due to shortage beds. The approximation employs homogeneous continuous-time Markov chain evaluate each ward as queue containing multiple classes patients. We avoid computational intractability by evaluating separately and accommodating arriving remaining wards interrupting arrival processes, interruption times follow hyper-exponential distributions. Numerical experimentation shows our is robust concerning type length-of-stay distribution generally results in minor loss accuracy. Further validation indicates model reflects Danish hospital.
